Idyllic Sanctuaries
This painting came about from reading a fictional story that took place place in New England somewhere by the sea. New England coastline is mesmerizing with crisp seascapes and soul-stirring visual poetry.
However, I soon realized that I needed to pull from my very own slow travel experiences to create something magical. Something that looked lime more what I had in my head.
So, between the clear waters of my native caribbean seas, the dramatic coastline of the wondrous Pacific Northwest, and some reference images of New England, I created this final piece.

Frankly, I feel that a lot of us might carry around a similar magical sanctuary in the depths of our subconscious...
I know for a fact I've visited mine several times: in dreams, lucid or not; certainly in waking ones i.e eyes wide open. Especially during meditation, where I have the power to build entire worlds - I easily "slide" into this place like I would walk through an ordinary door.
Having said that, the reality is that before I could craft this image, and decide that it was done, I had to go through several iterations, studies and sketches. The funny things is all of the color studies were done in gouache - a quite counter-productive thing since gouache is totally opaque! I ended up using watercolors in the final iteration. Sigh.

Public Announcement: This blog post is part of a collection of 354+ posts from my original Wordpress blog "Dreaming Into Being" library. I've now retired and migrated it to “Wander & Paint,” my new blog posts at the United Wanderlust art shop. As time allows, I will be reviewing, editing, condensing, updating and releasing a number of these blog posts but not all of them.
Some posts require more precision surgery than others. I'll also probably be publishing new posts as the muse wills it and father time allows. This whole process may take a while but I think these blog post serve as great documentation of my process and reminds me of certain milestones. So, most of them will be made available again- at some point.
