In the foraging for wild edibles topic, I'm developing a couple of designs for the Wild Foragers collection. So far I've illustrated an 11" x 15" piece focused on the hackberry tree and one about rosehips. The collection was inspired from foraging for wild dandelions, purslane and lamb's quarter in my own backyard.
The idea that food I don't have to cultivate is just a stone throw away never, ever fails to amaze me. Growing up in the Caribbean, my childhood home had all manner of volunteer (and planted) perennial fruit and veggies trees.
I remember there was at least one avocado tree but it was male. That tree was useless because as it turns out you need two to produce anything -one female and one male? Plus, there was a whole bevy of other tropical food that gave us bumper crops every season.
Wild foods tend to be a fascinating subject for armchair foragers like me and it starting to bleed into my own art.
Product Design for table top games, wall art and stationery. And so with this concept of foraging for wild foods, I'm developing in this collection, the first one of two playing cards for a possible outdoor plant identification table top game.
It would (very) loosely teach about foraging for wild edible foods in urban or suburban environments and you'd have to actually venture in nature, in the right season, to find them. Mostly though, this is great for me as well since I get to explore a lot of the earth tones and local colors but with a touch of atmosphere or magical realism.
The Wild Forager collection is rendered with traditional water-based media and techniques. It is then cleaned up and/or enhanced in post production with digital tools like Adobe Photoshop.

Public Announcement: This blog post is part of a collection of 354+ posts from my original Wordpress blog "Dreaming Into Being" library. I've now retired and migrated it to “Wander & Paint,” my new blog posts at the United Wanderlust art shop. As time allows, I will be reviewing, editing, condensing, updating and releasing a number of these blog posts but not all of them.
Some posts require more precision surgery than others. I'll also probably be publishing new posts as the muse wills it and father time allows. This whole process may take a while but I think these blog post serve as great documentation of my process and reminds me of certain milestones. So, most of them will be made available again- at some point.
