Puzzle Mood Board Concept
True South Puzzle company, is an indie table top game company from Tennessee. They use colorful illustrations to create their jigsaw puzzle games. They’ve partnered with TheyDraw.com (formerly Theydrawandcook.com and Theydrawandtravel.com) to request illustrations for an upcoming launch.
I’ve been eyeing this fun blog for creative souls for years. There’s so much beautiful atmospheric art about food and slow travel there, that it satisfies my ever present wanderlust fix and foodie cravings!
Together, they’ve shared a mood board pitch challenge which ended a couple of days ago. The owner of True South will select 10 illustrators from the results, to develop ideas into finished illustrations, for a series of puzzles to be released this fall.
The general theme is about slow travel.
However, a specific idea/ theme about a country, region, city etc…that can be turned into a fun puzzle (infographic, map or painting) is much more interesting. So, I immediately went for food and nature.
Below are the two spinoff mood boards I submitted to the challenge. I reviewed my collection of original watercolor illustrations, sketches and art journal studies for inspiration. I discovered a couple of colorful gems that would be amazing to expand on: American desserts & botanical gardens!
Great American Sweet Tooth – Food Illustrations Mood board #1
Food Illustration | Dessert Illustration Jigsaw Puzzle Mood Board
The “Great American Sweet Tooth” mood board is a puzzle concept inspired from a one-off, warm-up piece for the Wild Dining Illustrated project. That project involves lots of stylized and fun watercolor paintings of recipe illustrations and food illustrations.
Wild Dining Illustrated | Clockwise: Potato Wild Garlic Leek Soup, Oregon Grapes Jam Parfait, Cattail Pasta, Deep fried Chicken-of-the-Woods, Weeds & Bloom Salad
US Botanical Garden Denizens – Botanical Illustrations Mood Board #2
Remember Koi Galaxy ? Well, “US Botanical Garden Denizens,” the second puzzle proposal, would be a spin off of that large watercolor painting I created back in 2018. The complex and multi-layered style would be an excellent fit for a puzzle game that could hang, once completed, on a wall.

So long story short…
Both ideas were published on TheyDraw.com!
I’m pretty stoked! I’ve been following the blog, TheyDraw.com, for years. The artists they feature are pretty impressive! And…sometimes downright intimidating! Even if my designs don’t make it to the final selection process, that my ideas are worth sharing and are up for consideration – is darn fantastic!
So yeah. Happy camper here.
