Tangy Pawpaw Lime Ginger Recipe Illustration Sketch
Mango and papaya drenched in lime juice with a strong dash of ginger? Heaven in my mouth, baby. Pawpaw, a native American fruit, has a custardy texture and taste not unlike banana, I'm told. Could this fruit be the great substitute contender to exotic mangos and papayas?
There are very few fruits that a lime-ginger combo can't cure, enhance or supercharge - in my humble opinion.
To err on the side of caution though, having never tasted the fruit, I'll rely on the enthusiastic response of the surprising fan base of this little-known American fruit, to validate my own intuition.

Since there exists a national Pawpaw day, I'm sharing another of the newer, rough concept sketches for the "Wild Dining Illustrated" watercolor recipe project.
This is a brief behind-the-scene peek into my creative process. It shows how I approached the pencil sketch of the Tangy Pawpaw Lime-Ginger dish illustration.
I'm specifically attempting to demonstrates how I'm using cut pieces of tracing paper to feel my way around each stages all the way to the final drawing.

Step 1 - Rough Draft - Thumbnail Concept It's a Mess Stage
I'm brainstorming general design directions. I'm trying to tease out what I'm seeing in my mind's eye on plain white paper. It feels meh and I'm not excited about the ordinary and uninspiring thing in front of me.
Step 2 -Tracing Overlay - Liminal Something is Trying to Happen Stage
I refine the concept more with tracing paper - especially for major changes. I'm exploring all avenues because I'm not destroying my first iterations. I just overlay the area I want to change with tracing paper. I edit right on top of it.
I become excited whenever one line, or one curve ignites more creative fuel or illuminates potential creative solutions and paths ..all the way to the final pencil sketch.
Step 3 - Final Sketch - It's Alive! Stage
The concept is fully developed after 3+ development passes, sometimes even more is needed for one or more sketches in the same collection.
Mind you, I'm using this method to develop 40+ sketches, in batches at the same time, using the storyboard format often used for movies and children's books. The example below shows the final drawings for the 6 recipes in the Main Dish category.

Public Announcement: This blog post was originally published during the holiday season in a Christmas jingle format. It is part of a collection of 354+ posts from my original Wordpress blog "Dreaming Into Being" library. I've now retired and migrated it to “Wander & Paint,” my new blog post at the United Wanderlust art shop. As time allows, I will be reviewing, editing, condensing, updating and releasing a number of these blog posts but not all of them.
Some posts require more precision surgery than others. I'll also probably be publishing new posts as the muse wills it and father time allows. This whole process may take a while but I think these blog post serve as great documentation of my process and reminds me of certain milestones. So, most of them will be made available again- at some point.
